Discovery Island, originally named Treasure Island, opened in 1974. In 1981 it gained accreditation as a zoological park. Discovery Island closed it's shores in 1999 shortly after the opening of Animal Kingdom where all the animals were transfered to. Discovery Island was a hidden gem of WDW. A wonderful ride-thru our past. A ride many will never get to explore. This was a famous attraction at the Walt Disney World Resort's Magic Kingdom, and operated from 1971-1994. The attraction opened two weeks after the park on October 14, 1971, and was one of its first E ticket attractions. Not exactly a clone of the Disneyland sub ride, it was bigger and more upto date.
