Tour of Discovery Island Discovery Island, originally named Treasure Island, opened in 1974. In 1981 it gained accreditation as a zoological park. Discovery Island closed it's shores in 1999 shortly after the opening of Animal Kingdom where all the animals were transfered to. Discovery Island was a hidden gem of WDW.
